Thornbury scouts help old people

The Third Thornbury Scouts have been visiting care homes in Thornbury to help members achieve their Chief Scouts Gold Award.

The award requires that scouts should spend some time helping and chatting to many different people in the community. They contacted us to ask for help. We suggested that they might like to help at two care homes in the area which had already said they would like volunteers and community groups to spend time with their residents.

To arrange this, we put the scout leader in touch with the Alive Activities ‘Making Pals’ project, which aims to connect care homes with their local community. The result was that every six weeks on a Saturday the scouts have been visiting Alexandra Way Care Home to chat to the residents and have been helping at events at Beech House Care Home.

Members of the Third Thornbury Scouts and residents of Beech House Care Home meet for the Armistice parade.

On 11 November 2018, the 100th anniversary of the First World War armistice, the Third Thornbury Scouts arranged for three residents from Beech House to join them in the Thornbury Remembrance Day Parade. The scouts and residents paraded together through Thornbury, with the scouts pushing the residents in their wheelchairs, ending at a church service at St. Mary’s Church. Lisa Russell, the activities coordinator at Beech House said ‘It was lovely, it felt really special to be with everyone in the parade’.

The Scouts plan to continue visiting residents and helping with events.
